Three Zombies & A Demon!

I just got my contributor’s copies of Three Zombies & A Demon by Roy C. Booth, a collection of 4 one-act plays adapted from short stories appearing in Necrotic Tissue. I was curious to see how my story “With Good Intentions” would translate into a play since it was only 500 words long. Turns out Roy added a third character to the story, Pansy, a feisty temp worker who joins my characters Vervek and Crilloc in their literal workplace hell. It’s a fun read and made me laugh out loud several times. Plus, the cover art is awesome. Copies are available from Necrotic Tissue, and will soon be available at amazon.com and B&N.com

NaNoWriMo, I’m ready for you!

Posted by Nicky Drayden on Aug 12, 2010 in Announcements

I’ve already got another novel in the works, which I’m hoping to get drafted by the end of October. So I was thinking about giving long form a little break and working on some short stories for NaNoWriMo. Today, I got the idea to do 20 stories based on the same character, each with one of the 20 Master Plots. I should be done with my Master Plot reviews by then also, so I’ll have a bunch of example material to refer to if I get stuck.

In a perfect world, these 20 stories will fit together in some overarching way, but I won’t worry about that just yet. In fact, I probably won’t put much more thought into this until October 31st, but I’m thinking space opera! Or maybe some rich fantasy world! Lots of possibilities.

August Craft Focus: 20 Master Plots

Posted by Nicky Drayden on Jul 30, 2010 in Announcements

Ahhh! Is it August already? Well, good news is I’ve got my latest novel proofed and out the door. So this month, I’ll be playing catch-up with my reviews. I think I’m a bit “tone deaf” when it comes to plotting, so I’ve set my sights on identifying all 20 of the Master Plots (as presented in Tobias Buckle’s 20 Master Plots and How to Build Them) within the short fiction of some of my favorite pro markets. Maybe this will also expose some trends in what types of plot lines editors are drawn to, or what writers are writing more often. I’m going to try to kick out as many as I can this month before settling into my next novel, and all of my time gets sucked up again.

And for those playing at home, this site has a list of the plots and some fun exercises as well.
